JAKARTA - Samsung is starting to reveal more information about the Galaxy Smart Glasses, an Android XR-based smart glasses that is scheduled to launch later this year. Unlike its competitors' approach, Samsung positions the device as a complement to the Galaxy smartphone, not as a standalone device.
In a press conference after the Galaxy Unpacked event in London, Samsung's Head of Research and Development for Extended Reality (XR) Research and Development, Choi Jae-in, explained that the Galaxy Smart Glasses are designed to take advantage of the smartphone's ability as the main processing center.
The approach is carried out through a technology called split computing. With this system, glasses only handle light tasks locally, while processes that require large computing power, such as image processing, live translation, artificial intelligence (AI) based navigation, and visual processing, are run by a connected smartphone.
This strategy allows Samsung to present glasses with a lighter weight and comfortable to use without having to include a high-performance processor in its frame.
The Galaxy Smart Glasses use a wearable chipset from Qualcomm and are claimed to last up to nine hours on a single charge.
For the design side, Samsung collaborated with two well-known eyewear brands, Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. The company showed four design variations that emphasize a premium look while still being comfortable to wear all day.
Samsung also applies various durability tests that were previously used on the Galaxy folding phone line. These tests include hinge durability, drop tests, and resistance to chemical exposure so that the device remains strong for everyday use.
The Galaxy Smart Glasses are also designed to be integrated with the Galaxy ecosystem. Users can take advantage of the double pinch gesture through the Galaxy Watch to take photos, control music playback, or answer phone calls.
When the Galaxy Buds are worn, audio from the glasses will automatically be routed to the device. In addition, the Galaxy Smart Glasses can be connected directly to various applications such as Samsung Notes, Gmail, and Google Maps.
Samsung also highlights privacy as one of the main focuses in the development of this device. The company says that about 10 percent of the Galaxy Smart Glasses patent portfolio is related to abuse prevention features.
