JAKARTA - The Ministry of Communication and Digital has confirmed that preparations for the implementation of the biometric SIM card registration based on face recognition have entered the final stage ahead of full implementation on July 1.
Director General of Digital Ecosystems at the Ministry of Communications, Edwin Hidayat Abdullah, stated that his party and all mobile operators were ready to implement biometric verification in full.
"On July 1, all mobile operators and Komdigi will announce that they are ready for the process. The process is in the final stage, we review everything," said Edwin when met in Jakarta a few days ago.
He added that this biometric verification will be focused on new SIM card users. Meanwhile, old SIM cards that have previously been verified using NIK numbers and KK numbers are not required to re-register.
Because according to him, the government still needs to evaluate the infrastructure and reliability of the system before deciding whether a similar mechanism must be applied to old customers or not.
"First of all, this has to be seen as ready. This includes infrastructure readiness, because there are so many numbers. Meanwhile, our data is all in Dukcapil. And it's impossible, if hundreds of millions of people flock, we have to see. Well, it takes time, process," he said.
Edwin also stated that the implementation of biometrics for all old customers requires careful preparation, given the number of mobile numbers that have been circulating is already very much.
"Now the focus is on new registration first. We have to see over the past six months what the level of reliability of the system and others are like," added Edwin.
Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the Association of All Indonesian Telecommunications Operators (ATSI) Marwan O. Baasir also suggested that the re-registration of existing customers would not be carried out first.
Because according to him, customers who have registered using NIK and NOKK before the Minister of Communication and Digital Regulation (PM Komdigi) Number 7 of 2026 was enacted, were declared to have been registered.
"Because in the PM it says that customers who have registered before the PM are already registered. So there is no need to re-register," he concluded.
