JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump said Apple agreed to work with Intel to design and produce chips in the US. The claim was made as Washington pushed for the semiconductor industry to be built back in the country.

According to an Anadolu Agency report quoted on Friday, June 19, Trump made the statement through Truth Social, Thursday.

"Apple has agreed to work with Intel to design and make its chips in America," Trump said.

Trump said the US has designed many of the world's technologies, but too few are made domestically.

"We design everything, but we have to build it here, now," he said.

Semiconductors are the main components in chips used in mobile phones, computers, data centers, and AI systems.

Trump's statement immediately moved the market. Intel shares rose about 9 percent in premarket trading. Apple shares rose 0.6 percent.

Trump called Apple and Intel's cooperation part of a series of manufacturing deals in the US. Previously, Nvidia and Intel in September announced a collaboration to develop AI infrastructure and personal computing products.

Intel also stated that it is partnering with SpaceX, xAI, and Tesla to support Terafab, a semiconductor project associated with Elon Musk.

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan in April said a number of companies were exploring ways to increase the efficiency of silicon manufacturing. Global semiconductor supply is still difficult to catch up with the surge in demand triggered by AI.

In his post, Trump also alluded to Nvidia and Musk. He said his administration helped bring Nvidia in, while Musk was said to have agreed to build "TerraFab" with Intel's technology team.

Trump said Washington backed Intel in return for a 10 percent stake in the chipmaker.

Anadolu noted that Intel in August announced a US government investment of US$8.9 billion in Intel common stock. The investment is equivalent to 9.9 percent of shares and is part of support for domestic semiconductor manufacturing.

According to Trump, Intel's value was around 100 billion US dollars when the government made an offer. Now it is said to be worth more than 600 billion US dollars. With that count, the US government's stake in Intel is worth more than 60 billion US dollars.
