JAKARTA - The competition for artificial intelligence chips is getting tighter. Nvidia boss Jensen Huang met SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won in Taipei to discuss cooperation on AI memory, one of the important components in the explosion of artificial intelligence technology.

Launching a Yonhap report, Tuesday, June 2, the meeting took place on Monday on the sidelines of Computex, one of Asia's largest technology exhibitions. SK Group said the two executives met after SK hynix reached a market capitalization of 1 trillion US dollars. Market capitalization is the value of a company on the exchange based on its share price.

SK hynix is a subsidiary of SK Group and one of the key players in memory chips for AI. Memory chips help data centers and high-performance computers process huge amounts of data.

The meeting between Huang and Chey was also used to review the achievements of cooperation between the two companies in the field of AI memory. Both confirmed their commitment to strengthening the AI infrastructure, namely data centers, chips, networks, and software that support artificial intelligence services.

Huang previously mentioned robotics as one of the potential areas for Nvidia's investment in South Korea. According to an industry source quoted by Yonhap, he is scheduled to visit Seoul starting Thursday evening.

On Friday, Huang is expected to meet with a number of South Korean conglomerate leaders. Among them are Chey, LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo, as well as Lee Hae-jin, founder and chairman of the board of directors of Naver.

Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung is also said to be considering attending the meeting. Kim Taek-jin, CEO of gaming company NC Corp., is expected to meet Huang on Sunday.

Huang's agenda in Seoul is not expected to stop at AI chips. Business observers assess that the talks could expand to robotics and physical AI, namely the use of AI on machines, robots, vehicles, and systems that work directly in the real world.

South Korea has good reason to welcome Huang. The country has a chip, automotive, gaming, internet, and electronics giant. All of these sectors are now seeking a position in the AI wave.

Huang's name is already popular in South Korea. During his previous visit in October, while attending the APEC CEO Summit in Gyeongju, he attracted attention after eating Korean fried chicken and beer or chimaek with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and Euisun Chung.

Public enthusiasm even emerged before Huang arrived. According to industry observers, someone named "Jun" made an online map that tracked Huang's possible agenda and movements during his visit to South Korea.

Huang's visit drew the attention of South Korean businesspeople to new cooperation opportunities with Nvidia, especially in the fields of AI chips, robotics, and AI technology that are directly connected to machines in the real world.
