Google has joined a list of technology companies that have signed an agreement with the US Department of Defense. In this agreement, Google will provide an Artificial Intelligence (AI) model.
The Pentagon will later gain access to Google's AI technology. The AI model will be used for various government tasks, both legitimate and sensitive.
This deal puts Google on par with other big companies like OpenAI and xAI. Both companies have already established similar cooperation with the Pentagon first.
All companies invited to work together will help the government in handling important tasks, including planning military missions and targeting weapons. The Pentagon is known to have prepared funds of up to 200 million US dollars (Rp3.4 trillion) for each AI laboratory involved in this project.
In the agreement, Google is required to help the government adjust the settings and AI security filters as requested. This is done so that the AI model used remains in line with military operating standards.
Although this project is confidential, Google confirmed its commitment not to use AI in domestic mass surveillance. The company also prohibits the use of this technology for autonomous weapons without adequate human supervision and control.
Google believes that providing API access to their commercial models is a responsible form of support for national security. They express their support for government agencies, both in projects that are classified and non-classified.
On the other hand, the Pentagon stressed that they are not interested in using AI to spy on American citizens en masse. The main focus of the government is to ensure the legitimate use of AI without the restrictions of standards such as civilian users.
