JAKARTA - Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, emphasized that Indonesia encourages an artificial intelligence (AI) governance model that places humans as the main controller.
He stated that the model was designed as a concrete solution to deal with the acceleration of the development of AI technology that has the potential to surpass the existing regulatory framework.
"Our focus is not on concerns, but on the design of a system that ensures humans remain in the lead in the use of AI," Nezar said in an official statement.
With humans as the main controller, Nezar added, every AI system remains under human supervision, especially in sectors with a major impact such as public services, security, and the digital economy.
"Every system must be designed so that humans can intervene, correct, and be responsible for the results," he explained.
As a concrete step, the government has prepared a National AI Roadmap which will serve as a guide for the development of technology in Indonesia.
This roadmap will set the direction for research, strengthening digital talent, cross-sector collaboration, and risk mitigation from the early stages of development.
Indonesia has also established ten main principles of AI governance. These principles become standards in every technological development, ranging from the protection of personal data, system transparency, to ensuring fairness and inclusiveness.
Meanwhile, globally, Indonesia has taken an active role in presenting the perspective of developing countries in AI governance discussions.
Indonesia encourages more equal cooperation so that each country has the same opportunity in developing technology and drafting regulations.
