JAKARTA - South Korean technology giant Samsung Electronics confirmed that it will launch its latest mobile phone, the Samsung Galaxy M17e 5G, on March 17, 2026 in India. Although targeting the low-end mobile phone segment, this device steals the spotlight for promising software update support for up to six years - something that is usually only found on flagship-class smartphones.

The strategy shows a major shift in the smartphone industry competition, where device life is now an important factor in addition to hardware specifications.

Samsung promotes this device as a "Battery Monster", referring to the 6,000 mAh capacity battery embedded in it. This capacity even surpasses the battery used in their latest flagship, including the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra.

Interestingly, despite carrying a large battery, this phone has a thickness of around 8.2 mm. This means that Samsung has managed to maintain a relatively thin design without using silicon-carbon battery technology that has begun to be widely used by several other smartphone manufacturers.

In terms of screen, the Galaxy M17e 5G comes with a 6.7-inch panel that supports a 120Hz refresh rate. However, the resolution remains at the HD+ level, a step that seems to be deliberately taken to keep the price affordable.

For performance, Samsung equips this device with a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset based on 6 nanometer fabrication. This processor is designed to provide stable 5G connectivity as well as performance that is sufficient for daily activities such as social media, video streaming, and light multitasking.

In the camera sector, this phone relies on a 50MP main camera combined with a 2MP depth sensor to produce portrait effects. Meanwhile, for selfies, the front camera is still focused on the needs of digital communication and social media.

The Galaxy M17e 5G will run Android 16 with the One UI 8.0 interface from the first time it is used. If Samsung's commitment to updates is actually realized, the device can theoretically receive operating system updates up to Android 22 around 2032.

The device is expected to start at around 14,000 Indian rupees or around Rp2.7 million, making it one of the smartphones with the longest update support in that price range.
