JAKARTA - Discord has delayed the launch of an identity-based age verification (ID) system that will be implemented globally. This was done after the new policy was controversial.

The popular platform for gamers was forced to delay its launch so that the company had more time to increase transparency. Discord also wants to provide more options for users who are disturbed by the policy.

"We've listened to you, and we want to make sure everything goes right," Discord CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy said in a Discord official blog, quoted on Wednesday, February 25. "We are delaying our global launch until the second half of 2026."

Discord is taking an age verification approach to build stronger protections for its teen users on the platform. Discord wants to ensure there are clear boundaries for underage users.

Vishnevskiy explained that most users will not interact with the age-restricted space. Identity verification works as a last resort if other methods such as account age and activity patterns are insufficient.

Although the launch of this age verification system was suspended first, the rules still exist in the UK, Australia, and Brazil. The reason is that the three countries require identity checks or facial age estimates and Discord wants to comply.

Discord is also committed to no longer working with the same verification vendor after the trial period ends. They will look for new partners who are able to offer users full transparency regarding the management of personal data.

In the future, Discord will add a content warning channel option to avoid unnecessary age restrictions. Discord also promises to release a technical explanation of how the automatic age determination system works to maintain privacy.
