Duolingo is bringing Chess Player-vs-Player (PvP) mode to Android, following its successful launch on iOS at the end of 2025.
The feature allows Android users to learn chess through a beginner-friendly approach designed to hone critical and strategic thinking skills.
Through the PvP mode, learners can immediately test their abilities by challenging real opponents in real time.
Developed based on the Duolingo Method which emphasizes learning through practice, this chess course adapts one of the world's most iconic strategy games into a more accessible gamification approach.
"By bringing it to Android, we can reach more users, especially in markets that prioritize mobile devices such as Indonesia," said Irene Tong, Regional Marketing Manager, South East Asia.
He added that one of the findings obtained by his team was that playing against other people often felt intimidating for some users.
Through the Duolingo Chess course, users are invited to start from the basics, such as understanding the movement of each piece, and gradually improve their skills through solving puzzles and mini-matches guided by Oscar, the chess coach in the application.
To access PvP mode, learners can open the Matches tab and select the "Play a Person" option to be paired with an opponent of equal skill level.
Duolingo said it is currently preparing a number of updates to strengthen the learning experience on the Chess course, which includes features for playing with friends, game review features, expansion to the web platform, and advanced content development.
The Duolingo Chess course can be accessed for free via Android devices and is available in six languages, namely English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese.
The English, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, and French versions are automatically generated by the AI. So there may still be inaccuracies in translating, please always see Indonesian as our main language. (system supported by DigitalSiber.id)
