JAKARTA - Meta Platforms faces a major legal challenge after a smaller smart glasses manufacturer, Solos Technology, filed a patent infringement lawsuit over its best-selling product, Ray-Ban Meta. The lawsuit filed in the Massachusetts District Court at the end of January 2026 not only demands compensation of "several billion dollars," but also seeks to block the total sale of smart glasses in the market.

If the court grants the "several billion" in damages - for example, $2 billion equivalent to Rp33.51 trillion, an amount that could shake the financial stability of Meta's hardware division.

Solos claims that Meta's first and second generation smart glasses infringe on five core patents related to the basic technology of smart glasses, including multimodal sensing systems, beamforming audio processing, and AI-based intelligent assistant architecture.

In his lawsuit, Solos alleged that Meta employees and its manufacturing partner, EssilorLuxottica (parent company of Ray-Ban and Oakley), had deep knowledge of Solos' technology roadmap since 2015. They even mentioned the transfer of knowledge from an MIT researcher who studied Solos' technology before eventually joining Meta as a product manager.

This situation is very critical for Meta because the Ray-Ban smart glasses line is currently the fastest growing product category in the company. After having trouble with the "Metaverse" vision through heavy VR devices, Meta actually achieved great success through these classic glasses to the point of planning to produce 30 million units by 2026.

With a starting selling price of 299 US dollars or around Rp5.01 million, the potential revenue that is threatened if this sale is stopped by a court order is very massive, considering that Meta has just restructured the Reality Labs division to focus more on AI wearable devices such as these smart glasses.

On the other hand, Solos is not a new player in the industry; their products such as AirGo 5 have already integrated ChatGPT and direct translation features, functions very similar to what Meta currently offers. Solos accuses Meta of deliberately using technology that they have patented years before Meta entered the market to create a product that looks "normal" but sophisticated.

As of this writing, Meta and EssilorLuxottica have not provided official comments regarding the lawsuit, but investors are beginning to be aware of the legal impact this has on Meta's long-term plans in the artificial intelligence and hardware sectors.
