JAKARTA - Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis admitted to being surprised by OpenAI's efforts to bring ads to ChatGPT. According to Hassabis, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) company is moving too fast.
For Hassabis, adding ads to an AI chatbot platform is something that needs to be considered very carefully. Therefore, Google has not monetized its AI services to date.
"I'm a little surprised they've moved so quickly in that direction," Hassabis said in an interview with Axios, quoted on Friday, January 23. If the company takes the wrong step, user trust in chatbots is considered to be disrupted.
Hassabis explained that the AI assistant model is very different from the usual search engine that is filled with promotional content. Digital assistants are designed to work personally for the benefit of their individual users.
He also questioned how ads could enter the assistant model without compromising the credibility of the information provided. If the AI assistant turns into an advertising tool, its value is assessed to drop drastically for its users.
Although advertising is the main foundation of Google's business, Hassabis emphasized that his team did not feel pressured or even encouraged to do the same. Google chose to consider the decision to monetize AI very carefully.
Currently, Google has no immediate plans to include ads in Gemini, its AI chatbot. The company will continue to monitor user responses to advertising experiments conducted by others.
Google is also focusing on improving the personalization capabilities of Gemini to make it more useful for users. Google's main focus is still on developing AI technology that can help with daily activities more intelligently.
