JAKARTA - OpenAI launched an age prediction feature in ChatGPT, which is designed to help determine whether an account is likely to belong to someone under the age of 18 or not.

Through this feature, the ChatGPT system will predict the age of the user by considering several combinations of behavioral signals and the level of the account.

The consideration is how long the account has existed, certain times of the day when a person is active, patterns of use over time, and the age the user declares.

"Applying age prediction helps us learn which signals improve accuracy, and we use that learning to continue to refine the model over time," the company wrote in its official announcement.

When the age prediction system estimates that the account was created by someone under the age of 18, ChatGPT will automatically apply additional protection, to reduce exposure to sensitive content.

OpenAI said it had worked with experts in developing this feature. The design also refers to academic research on child development, as well as considering differences in adolescents, such as how they see risk, self-control, being influenced by friends, and managing emotions.

"When we are unsure about someone's age or have incomplete information, we will switch to a safer experience," he said.

The new feature will start rolling out in the European Union in the coming weeks, while taking into account the regulations in force in the country.

Because this is still early, OpenAI also stated that it will continue to improve the accuracy of age prediction over time and monitor the launch carefully in the future.
