JAKARTA - Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, emphasized the importance of harmonizing central and regional policies in the development of national telecommunications infrastructure.
This harmonization aims to make telecommunications infrastructure development faster and more efficient to meet people's needs for connectivity.
"Harmonization of regulations is not merely an administrative matter, but concerns the fulfillment of the basic rights of the public to remain connected and receive decent public services," Nezar said in an official statement quoted on Thursday, January 15.
In addition, Nezar also emphasized the need for collaboration between the government and industry to ensure that the cost of deploying infrastructure does not burden the finances of operators, which causes the development to be hampered.
The government has issued Government Regulation Number 46 of 2021 concerning Post, Telecommunications, and Broadcasting to encourage the transformation of the role of the Regional Government from merely an issuer of permits to a strategic facilitator who must provide ease of development of telecommunications infrastructure.
In addition, there is also the Minister of Home Affairs Regulation Number 7 of 2024 concerning Guidelines for the Management of Regional Property which allows operators to utilize infrastructure owned by the Regional Government to build telecommunications networks.
According to Nezar, both regulations are guidelines for the deployment of telecommunications lines that cross administrative areas.
"Don't let operators want to invest not to be because the cost is very expensive. Digital infrastructure is a critical infrastructure that we must take care of together," he said.
He emphasized that telecommunications infrastructure provides great benefits to the income of people in the region so that it needs to be supported by the Regional Government.
"We cannot talk about a strong digital ecosystem if our digital infrastructure is still weak. The two are very related and quality infrastructure is the foundation," he said.
