Google Translate has two new capabilities that are directly supported by Gemini. Thanks to the Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, the translation results of Translate become more natural and accurate.
Google's translation service has improved in terms of phrase translation. This improvement is very useful so that Google Translate is able to handle meanings that have nuances such as idioms, local expressions, or slang.
For example, when users try to translate an idiom, they will get a more natural translation. Gemini will analyze the context to provide a translation of the meaning of the idiom, not a literal translation of word for word.
The update began rolling out on Friday, December 12 in the US and India. Supported languages are not only English. Users can translate idioms in Spanish, Hindi, Mandarin, Japanese, German, and 14 other languages.
This enhanced text translation with Gemini is already available in the Google Translate app, both on Android and iOS. This update was also launched on the Google Translate website.
Google also launched another advanced feature in the form of live translation which is connected to headphones. Still with Gemini support, users can listen to translations in real-time, directly through their headphones.
This feature works like a live translator. If you are following a conversation or listening to someone speak in another language, you just need to put on headphones and activate the translation mode in the form of sound.

The audio that goes into the headphones is the result of translation with the desired language. The translated voice will retain the tone, emphasis, and rhythm of each speaker.
This feature is only available in beta in the Google Translate app for Android in three countries, namely the US, Mexico, and India. This feature works on all types of headphones and supports more than 70 languages. Google will bring this feature to iOS and more countries in 2026.
