JAKARTA After announcing his license agreement with OpenAI, Disney sent a warning letter to Google. According to Disney, Google has committed large-scale copyright infringement.

Disney accuses Google of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) models and services to 'exploit and commercially distribute' images and videos originating from Disney assets. This action is called copyright infringement.

The warning letter was sent on Wednesday, December 10 evening, by law firm Jenner and Block on behalf of Disney. In the letter, Disney demanded Google immediately stop alleged violations in its AI system.

Specifically, the act of copying Disney's copyrighted work without permission to train and develop AI models is considered a violation. The use of AI services to distribute commercially protected copies of works is also prohibited.

The letter also alludes to Google's infringement. Many images that lead to copyright infringement are given the Gemini logo. This action shows the exploitation of Disney's intellectual property.

There are a number of copyrighted characters that are suspected of being included in the act of infringement, ranging from Frozen, The Lion King, all Marvel films, to Star Wars. As evidence, Disney includes an example of a Darth secret image claimed to be produced by AI.

Disney said it had expressed this concern to Google for months. However, Google did not take any action in response. In fact, the violations committed by Google actually increased during that period.

Disney letters demand that Google immediately stop copying, public viewing, public performances, distribution, and creation of derivative works from Disney copyrighted characters. These demands apply to the results of Google's AI services, including on YouTube and YouTube Shorts apps.

"Disney will not tolerate commercial exploitation without permission for its character and copyrighted work by the so-called AI service," Disney wrote in its warning letter, reported via Variety on Friday, December 12.

A Google spokesperson responded to the letter. The tech giant explained that it uses public data from the open web to train its AI model. As an effort to prevent AI content, Google has built copyright controls such as Google-Evented and Content ID for YouTube.
