Nvidia Develops Location Verification Technology To Prevent AI Chip Smuggling

JAKARTA - Nvidia is testing location verification technology capable of detecting which countries their AI chips operate. The move comes amid US political pressure to prevent high-end chips from being smuggled into areas affected by export restrictions, particularly China.

The technology has not been released and has only been shown behind closed doors in recent months. This feature will come as an optional software update that customers can install, leveraging the confidenceal computing capabilities of Nvidia GPU. Its mechanism takes advantage of the communication time lag between the chip and the Nvidia server as a location indicator, similar to how internet services detect the origin of the connection.

In a statement, Nvidia explained that they are building a software service that allows data center operators to monitor the health and inventory of their entire AI GPU fleet. The software utilizes GPU's internal data on device performance and integrity to ensure location integrity and monitoring.

This feature will first be available in Nvidia's latest chip generation, Blackwell, which has a stronger athlete capability thaniri and Ampere. However, the company is also considering options to bring the feature to previous generation chips.

The United States' push is getting tougher after the Department of Justice cracked down on China's smuggling network, which allegedly attempted to incorporate more than $160 million worth of Nvidia chips into restricted areas. Washington wants a site verification system so that GPU AI no longer passes through the gray line.

However, Beijing's response was also fast. China's cybersecurity regulator has called on Nvidia to question whether the company's chips contain a "backdoor" that allows the US to access the system quietly.

Similar concerns surfaced again after US President Donald Trump said he would allow Nvidia H200's exports to China, although some analysts doubt whether Beijing will allow the chip purchases under a strict regulatory framework.

Nvidia insists there is no backdoor in their products. Software experts also assess that location verification technology can be built without weakening chip security. Geopolitical tensions are clearly behind this innovation. GPU is no longer just a means of computing, but a strategic commodity in the map of global technology competition that is getting hotter.
