JAKARTA Meta will offer personal advertising restriction options on Facebook and Instagram for EU (EU) users. This feature was launched to comply with the strict Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Launching from TechCrunch, the European Commission said that the ad restriction option is scheduled for release in January 2026. This is the first time Meta has offered ad restriction options across its social media.

"Meta will give users an effective choice between: agreeing to share all their data or choosing to share less personal data," the EU Commission said, quoted on Tuesday, December 9.

The Commission explained that this new feature comes after it conducts a 'close dialogue' with Meta. They will monitor the implementation and impact of this new feature on users after Meta officially launches it.

This limited advertising option is also a continuation of the case that Meta received in April 2025. At that time, Meta was fined 200 million euros (Rp 3.8 trillion) for violating DMA rules.

The results of the European Commission's investigation show that two Meta platforms, namely, Facebook and Instagram, force users to pay subscription fees to delete ads or approve the use of personal data for ad-supported platform versions.

Therefore, Meta is urged to present a new option that does not burden Facebook and Instagram users. It should be noted that this change will not be present in other countries, unless Meta faces similar challenges in other countries.
