JAKARTA - IBM is working with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), in launching IBM Impact Accelerator, a pro-bono program that helps organizations and governments develop AI solutions for environmental and economic resilience.

The project focuses on strengthening supply chains in a sustainable manner in Southeast Asia, including Singapore and Indonesia, by utilizing AI-based solutions to optimize resources, modernize supply chains, reduce emissions, and expand digital readiness.

Through this partnership, the NREL Foundation and IBM will develop an AI-based data sharing platform called Community Associated Knowledge Environment (CAKE).

The platform is designed to strengthen food, energy and water systems by providing visualization and real-time analysis that policymakers, NGOs, and business people can take advantage of.

"We hope that this project will be able to provide a strong and scalable data management system to minimize the risk of supply chains while improving performance," said NREL Foundation Executive Director Doug Arent in a statement quoted on Sunday, November 9.

IBM and the NREL Foundation will carry out a two-year collaboration in two phases. The first phase begins with IBM Garage methodology, designing a need-based solution on the ground.

In the next phase, IBM will help participants implement technology that supports social and environmental impacts.

"IBM is committed to supporting growth in Southeast Asia and, through collaboration with the NREL Foundation, wants to further encourage development by utilizing AI," said Catherine Lian, General Manager and Technology Leader, IBM ASEAN.

IBM itself has committed to disbursing up to 45 million US dollars (Rp750 billion) in the form of financial, technology, and service assistance for five years through the Impact Accelerator program to face environmental and economic challenges around the world.
