JAKARTA – Residents of Cirebon were shocked by the incident of an object falling from the sky on Sunday evening, October 5th. The fireball-like object is thought to be a meteor.
A video of the meteor's impact has gone viral on various social media platforms, including TikTok. According to local reports, the fireball landed accompanied by a very loud bang.
It is unknown how far the bang was heard. However, the object is suspected of triggering a fire after landing. In the video circulating on social media, flames from the meteor ball can be seen blazing quite high across the toll road.
This rare phenomenon occurred around 6:30 PM Western Indonesian Time (WIB). After the incident attracted public attention, experts, including the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), conducted in-depth observations.
BRIN's Principal Research Expert Thomas Djamaluddin stated that the Cirebon Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a tremor. The data was recorded at 6:39 PM WIB.
This vibration was recorded at an azimuth of 221. Although the boom has been confirmed, Thomas said further research is needed to determine the direction and cause of the meteor's impact.
"I conclude (that the falling object) was a fairly large meteor. This object crossed the Kuningan area to Cirebon Regency from the west. "Power," Thomas confirmed to VOI on Monday, October 6.
Thomas added that the meteor fell around 6:35 PM to 6:39 PM WIB. Although the meteor's size is not yet known, Thomas believes it was a large object because its boom was heard by local residents and recorded by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
"When it entered the lower atmosphere, (the meteor) generated a shock wave in the form of a booming sound, which was detected by the Cirebon BMKG at 6:39:12 PM WIB. The meteor fell in the Java Sea," Thomas explained.
