JAKARTA - OpenAI plans to release a new version of its video generator, Sora, which can make videos featuring copyrighted material, unless rights holders explicitly choose to refuse (opt out) so that their work does not appear. This was reported by the Wall Street Journal on Monday, September 29, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The artificial intelligence startup company has reportedly started informing talent and studio agencies over the past week about the opt-out process and this new product, which is scheduled to be released in the coming days.

This new process means that film studios and other intellectual property owners (KI) must explicitly ask OpenAI so that their copyrighted material is not included in the video made by Sora.

According to the report, although copyrighted characters will require an opt-out, this new product will not produce images of recognizable community leaders without their permission.

Separately, Wired reported Monday that OpenAI is preparing to launch its standalone Sora 2 app, which features a vertical video feed with a sliding-to-roll (swipe-to-scroll) navigation, similar to TikTok.

Based on documents seen by Wired, users will be able to create videos with a duration of up to 10 seconds using Sora. There is no option to upload photos or videos from the user's camera roller or other applications.

The app also has an identity verification feature that allows users to confirm their similarities. If users have verified their identity, they can use their resemblance in the resulting videos.

OpenAI launched the app internally last week and received a very positive feedback from its employees. OPENAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the media regarding the two media reports.

OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, launched Sora in December 2024, expanding its efforts in multimodal AI technology and competing with Alphabet's Meta and Google's text-to-video tools, as well as Alphabet's Stable Video Diffusion from AI Stability.

Last week, Meta launched Vibes, a platform where users can create and share short videos generated by AI.
