JAKARTA The Meta tech giant has officially signed a collaboration with the generative artificial intelligence laboratory, Midjourney, to license the so-called startup's aesthetic technology'. This agreement is aimed at strengthening Meta's future models and products, while reaffirming the company's ambition to improve visual quality amid intense competition in the AI industry.

Alexandr Wang, Meta Chief AI Officer, on Friday 22 August revealed that this collaboration is not only limited to a technology license, but will also connect the research team of the two companies.

"We are very impressed with Midjourney," Wang said in a post on platform X. To present the best product, Meta combines the best talent, strong computing roadmaps, and partnerships with leading industry players.

Midjourney is widely known as a startup that provides text-based image creation services via subscription systems. The technology they develop is considered capable of producing high-level visual quality, something Meta now wants to use to accelerate the development of creative features for users and marketers. That way, content can be produced more efficiently, costs can be reduced, and user engagement has the potential to increase.

The move also reflects Meta's new strategy after several challenges faced in previous AI efforts. The parent company Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp recently restructured its AI unit under the umbrella of Super Intelligence Labs, a high-risk initiative born after some senior staff left and their latest open-source model, Llama 4, received less warm welcome.

The deal with Midjourney is also a strong signal that Meta is trying to distinguish its products through superior visual quality, especially when competitors like OpenAI and ChatGPT and Google with Gemini continue to dominate the global AI stage.

Neither Meta nor Midjourney have yet to provide additional official comments regarding the details of this deal. However, analysts believe the cooperation could be a turning point for Meta to strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive artificial intelligence revolution.
