JAKARTA - Sony appears to be preparing a small surprise on its mid-range phone line. A leak from a casing seller on Amazon Japan features a device image that is touted as Sony Xperia 10 VII, the successor to Xperia 10 VI.

Most strikingly, the rear camera module of this device looks different: dual cameras with horizontal positions, no longer vertical like previous generations.

This step is interesting, considering that almost all Xperia phones in recent years have maintained a similar design without much change. The last time Sony used a horizontal camera module was in the first 10 Xperia in 2019.

In addition to the changing camera module, the overall design of Xperia 10 VII looks still similar to its predecessor. The front retains thick bezels above and below the screen, in contrast to most other mid-range phones which are now thinner and conciser. The side bezels are still quite narrow, following Sony's long-standing style that is loyal to Xperia's signature shape.

Based on Sumaho Digest's report last April, Xperia 10 VII is said to be coming with a 6.1-inch Full HD + OLED display that supports a 120Hz refresh rate. This is a significant increase from Xperia 10 VI which only uses 60Hz OLED panels. Aspects of Sony's typical 21:9 ratio are reportedly maintained.

For the kitchen runway, this device is likely equipped with Snapdragon 6 Gen 4, with a performance of about 15 percent faster than the previous generation. Even so, there are rumors that Sony could have chosen the latest Snapdragon series chipset to make it more attractive.

In the camera sector, Xperia 10 VII is reportedly carrying a 50MP main camera, 8GB RAM supported, and 5,000mAh batteries. Other details such as a second camera configuration or additional features have not been revealed.

Sony usually releases the Xperia 10 series in May. But this time, it is reported that the new Xperia 10 VII will launch in October 2025, much slower than usual schedules. This raises speculation that Sony is preparing something different, even though the changes displayed so far are still relatively small.

With Xperia's history tending to be conservative in design, a change to this horizontal camera module could be the starting signal that Sony is starting to open up to a little more experiment.
