JAKARTA - United States (US) President Donald Trump launched an aggressive strategy with low regulations aimed at ensuring America remains superior to China in terms of artificial intelligence (AI).
This also has the potential to quickly develop AI, which can cause negative impacts on humans. The head of the UN International Telecommunications Union (ITU), totaling Bogdan-Martin, said he hoped AI could really benefit mankind.
However, as concerns increase over the risks posed by this rapidly growing technology, including concerns about the loss of mass employment, the spread of deepfakes and disinformation, as well as the deteriorating community order, he stressed that regulations were needed to overcome them.
"There is an urgency to try to get the right framework," he said as quoted by CMNP.
Among more than 90 proposals, Trump called for a thorough deregulation to remove aggravating bureaucracy and regulations for AI development in the private sector.
However, Bogdan-Martin still declined to comment on the potential for AI technology to encourage job reduction, not an increase. "I think there are various approaches," he said.
"We have an EU approach. We have a Chinese approach. Now we are looking at the US approach. I think what is needed are those approaches for dialogue," he added.
At the same time, he stressed that 85% of countries in the world do not yet have AI policies or strategies. "I think debate at the global level still needs to be done to find out how much regulation is, how few regulations are needed," he said.
As countries and companies race to strengthen their dominance in this fast-growing sector, there are concerns that preventive measures could see them lose in competition, or those who do not have the capacity to participate will be left behind.
However, there is a risk that AI will end up "enhancing inequality". This refers to the gap in poor countries that so far do not have access to the internet.

"We have 2.6 billion people who don't have access to the internet, which means they don't have access to artificial intelligence," said Bogdan-Martin.
"We have to overcome this gap if we really want to have something useful for all mankind," he added.
