JAKARTA Steam support for Chromebook beta will end in the near future. Reportedly, Google will completely stop this support early next year.

This announcement was shared after Google did not provide any updates to the device. In fact, Steam support for Chromebooks has been launched since 2022.

Currently, if users try to install Steam, they will see a warning message explaining that an installed game will not be playing after January 1, 2026.

Initially, Steam for Chromebooks was part of Google's efforts to drive gaming capabilities on ChromeOS. This is the third way to play games on Chromebooks other than through Android and cloud gaming services.

Steam for Chromebook first appeared in the Alfa version in March 2022, then switched to Beta in November 2022. When updated, the requirements for hardware decreased.

Users need Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 with 8 GB RAM to access Steam. However, the more recommended specifications are Core i5 or Ryzen 5 with 16 GB RAM.

Steam for Chromebooks uses the Linux version of the game. There are 99 titles supported by Google and all of these games can only be accessed for another three months.

This discontinuation of support also shows that Steam will never reach a stable version on Chromebooks. Although it will not support Steam again, Google hints that gaming on Chromebook still has a future.
