JAKARTA MethaneSAT, a satellite belonging to the nonprofit Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), has stopped operating. The methane tracking satellite, which Google supports, died after a year of operation.

EDF said they lost the satellite contact on June 20, 2025. The team has made a series of recovery efforts, but nothing has worked. Therefore, the team concluded that the MethaneSAT satellite had lost its power.

From the various efforts the team made, the non-profit organization stated that MethaneSAT's condition could not be restored. For now, the EDF engineering team is investigating its satellites to find out the cause of the communication network's interruption.

"The engineering team is conducting a thorough investigation into the loss of communication. This process is expected to take time. We will share what we learned," the EDF team said via the official MethaneSAT website, quoted on Thursday, July 3.

MethaneSAT was launched in March 2024 as part of SpaceX's Transporter-10 mission. The satellite was launched to collect methane emission data for more than a year. The satellite is claimed to be one of the most advanced methane tracers in space.

The 88 million US dollars (Rp1.4 trillion) satellite measures methane emissions from oil and gas producing regions around the world. MethaneSAT is designed to find methane hotspots and provides data analysis that can be accessed freely regarding specific emission sources.

"Thanks to MethaneSAT, we gained important insights into the distribution and volume of methane released from oil and gas production areas. We are also developing unprecedented capabilities," said EDF.

Although the satellite is no longer functioning, EDF is committed to continuing to turn data into action as a form of climate protection. Of course one of its actions is collecting methane data to reduce emissions from the oil and gas industry globally.
