JAKARTA - Apple is reportedly developing seven new head-mounted products, including the latest version of Vision Pro and smart glasses, in an effort to change the way we consume content. Despite the slow start of the launch of Vision Pro, Apple remains committed to competing with Meta, Google, and other companies in the ever-growing AR and XR markets.

Currently, we usually consume content by holding or sitting in front of devices such as smartphones, tablets, or computers. This method has been going on for decades, but many companies have started challenging this method with devices such as headsets and smart glasses. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to dive into this realm by developing seven head-mounted products.

Apple has introduced a headset before, namely Vision Pro which was announced in WWDC 2023 and released a year later. However, this product is not commercially successful due to high prices and lack of supporting ecosystems so customers are reluctant to buy.

Even so, Vision Pro's failure did not make Apple withdraw. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is developing several head-mounted products that may only be available in the next few years.

The first model to be released is the next generation of Vision Pro with the M5 chipset. Mass production is scheduled for the third quarter of 2025 and launch is expected at the end of the year. Next is Vision Air, whose mass production is planned for the third quarter of 2027, followed by the second generation Vision Pro in 2028.

Apart from headsets, Apple is also developing Ray-Ban-like smart glasses. Mass production of these glasses is scheduled for the second quarter of 2027 with the launch of the same year. Apple is also rumored to be making XR glasses which will be released in 2028. Finally, there are additional screen accessories that are expected to start mass production in the second quarter of 2026.

Apple is not alone in pushing the headset market and smart glasses. Companies like Snap and Meta are already aware of the potential of this market, with Ray-Ban Meta as one of the most popular smart glasses today. Meta is also expanding its cooperation with Oakley to present a more sporting model.

Samsung and Google are also seriously entering this market through Project Moohan which uses the Android XR platform from Google. Currently, Apple feels left behind in this competition. Hopefully when Apple brings the latest product to market, they still have a chance to catch up.
