JAKARTA - OpenAI said it would set up its first office in Seoul, South Korea, and was recruiting employees for partnerships and local policies.

In a release shared on Monday, May 26, OpenAI saw that South Korea is the country that has the largest number of paid ChatGPT subscribers outside the US.

With its construction in South Korea, the country will be OpenAI's third office in Asia, after Japan and Singapore.

"The Korea-filled pile of AI ecosystem makes it one of the most promising markets in the world for meaningful AI impacts, from silicon to software, and from students to parents," Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon said in a statement citing Reuters.

Thus, the San Francisco-centric company now employs nearly 40 people in Japan and 20 more in Singapore.

Earlier this year, OpenAI announced it would develop artificial intelligence products for South Korea with chat application operator Kakao.

On the other hand, OpenAI recently announced that it had acquired hardware startup Jony Ive,io Products, in a $6.5 billion deal.

The California company will also appoint it as the creative chief to develop devices designed specifically for the era of generative artificial intelligence.

With Ive leading the design, OpenAI aims to combine the technology behind the popular ChatGPT chatbot with product design expertise that makes devices like iPhones a selling product.
