JAKARTA - Microsoft on Tuesday 6 April announced it will release a new laptop and tablet with Qualcomm chips at a more affordable price. This is an attempt by the Oregon company to bring the latest artificial intelligence (AI) features to more users.

The latest device consists of a Surface 13-inch laptop and a 12-inch Surface Pro tablet, which will go on sale on May 20, at prices ranging from 899 (Rp14.7 million) for laptops and US$799 (Rp13.1 million) for tablets.

Both devices will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Plus chips, and the price will be slightly below Apple's similar products, such as the MacBook Air priced from $999 and the iPad Air Pro which starts from $649 to $999.

However, this new device from Microsoft is the cheapest to support the Copilot+ feature, an AI technology suite that was first introduced last year. These features include the ability to ask questions in natural languages such as "How to change computer settings?" without having to browse the settings menu, as well as the ability to request the first draft of Word documents made by AI.

Microsoft has set specific requirements for high-performance chips so that devices can get a Copilot+ label, which was previously only available on devices for over $1.000.

Pavan Davuluri, Vice President of the Windows and Device Division of the Corporate Division at Microsoft, said that this latest Surface device is aimed at reaching more users, especially young students and professionals who are just starting their careers.

"We believe that the new Surface Pro and laptop are aimed at customers who make affordability an important factor," Davuluri told reporters at a press conference on April 28.
