JAKARTA - TikTok began testing a new feature called "Footnotes" in the United States on Wednesday, April 16. This feature is described as similar to the "Community Notes" that have been used on platforms X (previously Twitter) and Meta. This step was taken when TikTok was still waiting for a confirmation of a deal to keep operating in the US.

In its announcement, TikTok said that the Footnotes feature allows users to add 'additional information and relevant contexts' to video content. It aims to improve understanding of content reliability and provide access to trusted sources.

"This will add to our line-up of efforts to help users understand content reliability and find authoritative sources of information," said Adam Presser, Head of Operations and Trust & Safety TikTok, in a blog post.

With Footnotes, TikTok is the latest platform to adopt a crowd-sourced model to provide context to content. Previously, Meta also started testing similar features in March, using technology developed by Elon Musk's X.

Users in the US can now register as Footnotes contributors, and TikTok will notify those who qualify.

Requirements to be a contributor to Footnotes:

- Age 18 years and over

- Has an account that is active for more than six months

- Has no violation of Community Guidelines in the near future

Selain itu, TikTok juga menyatakan bahwa pengguna dengan pendapat berbeda bisa memberikan suara apakah sebuah catatan (footnote) dianggap membantu atau tidak 'similar sistem voting pada Community Notes di X.

Context Of Regulatory Tensions

The move comes amid future uncertainty of TikTok in the US, after law in 2024 requires ByteDance, a parent company from China, to sell TikTok before January 19, 2025.

US President Donald Trump extended the deadline for the second time in April and stated that an agreement was still on the table.

With the presence of Footnotes, TikTok is showing efforts to be more transparent and accountable in the face of pressure from American regulators, as well as strengthening its image as a safe and informative platform for its users.
