JAKARTA - The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) together with the Ministry of Investment/BKPM strengthens synergies in encouraging the growth of the telecommunications sector in Indonesia, especially in increasing connectivity.

Minister of Trade Meutya Hafid said that currently, the main challenges are still around the limited connectivity, where 86 percent of schools in Indonesia do not yet have fixed broadband access, 38 percent of village offices have not been connected to the internet, and 75 percent of health centers have inadequate connections.

Therefore, with the strengthening of collaboration with the Ministry of Investment, Meutya hopes to attract more investment in order to accelerate digitization and increase connectivity across the country.

"We are committed to accelerating the distribution of internet access throughout Indonesia. Therefore, innovative strategies in telecommunications infrastructure development must be implemented to ensure more efficient and inclusive investments," said Meutya.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Investment, Rosan Roeslani also agreed that investment in the digital sector is a crucial step to increase Indonesia's competitiveness at the global level.

We see great potential in digital investment, especially in network infrastructure and 5G technology. Synergy between the government and the private sector will be key in ensuring sustainable digital-based economic growth," said Rosan.

In an effort to accelerate the adoption of 5G, Komdigi proposed the implementation of the Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) model, as has been successfully implemented in Malaysia, which allows operators to share infrastructure, so as to accelerate network expansion while reducing investment costs.

In addition, the use of PLN's infrastructure is also a strategic solution in expanding the telecommunication network to areas where there is still minimal internet access.

"By utilizing PLN electricity poles for the distribution of fiber optics, investment costs can be reduced by 67 percent, accelerating internet penetration more efficiently," explained the Minister of Communication and Industry.

The government targets the mobile broadband speed to reach 100 Mbps by 2029, in accordance with the 2025-2029 RPJMN. With the synergy between Komdigi, the Ministry of Investment, and the industrial sector, Indonesia is optimistic that it can provide more equitable, innovative, and sustainable digital infrastructure.
