JAKARTA - British media regulator, Ofcom, on Monday 4 March set a deadline of March 31 for social media platforms and other online platforms to submit risk assessments regarding the possibility of users facing illegal content on their websites.
The new law passed last year requires companies such as Meta's Facebook and Instagram as well as ByteDance's TikTok to take action against criminal activity on their platforms and improve user security.

Under the Online Security Act, companies must assess and reduce the risks of various violations on their platforms, including terrorism, hate crimes, child sexual exploitation, and financial fraud.
"In particular, they have to determine how likely users are to find illegal content in their services, or in case of interuser services, how their platform can be used to commit or facilitate certain crimes," said Ofcom in a statement.
Failure to meet this assessment deadline could result in law enforcement action by Ofcom.
