JAKARTA - Amazon.com Inc plans to launch Amazon-branded TVs in the United States as soon as October this year. The plan first appeared in a Business Insider report on Thursday, September 2.
The launch, which involved teams from Amazon Devices and Lab126, has been going on for nearly two years, according to the report citing insider information familiar with the matter.
The TV, which will be powered by the Alexa voice assistant, is currently being designed and manufactured by a third party. One of them is TCL, the report added. Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
The tech giant launched AmazonBasics TV in India late last year. They saw that AmazonBasic's TV performance was satisfactory enough to plan to bring it back to US audiences.
AmazonBasics, is a brand already owned by e-commerce giant Amazon, which is thought to have quietly launched two new Ultra HD Smart LED TVs in India. The AmazonBasics 4K Smart TV comes in two size variants - 50-inch and 55-inch.
