JAKARTA - Messenger users are now able to make voice or video calls with end-to-end encryption (E2EE) security features. Facebook launched this feature is to provide a new experience for users.
Quoting The Verge, Sunday 15, August, this E2EE feature provides quite capable security. Because no one other than the person you are talking to will be able to see, listen to chats or calls when E2EE is enabled. This helps add an extra layer of protection to voice and video conversations in Messenger.
Facebook reports today that Messenger has received more than 150 million voice or video calls a day. Facebook characterizes E2EE as the industry standard across messaging services. Even so, to ensure their platform is not abused, Facebook says users can still report messages if needed.
Not only E2EE features, there are also updates for disappearing messages. Users will see options when they tap on a profile photo in a chat, as well as in the message field by tapping the timer icon in that location. Users can now also enable disappearing messages for everyone in the chat. In addition, users have more control between how long messages can be seen and when they disappear, the choice is five seconds and 24 hours.
Additionally, Facebook currently has several other E2EE features in the works. They say the feature is being developed and will start public testing in the near future.
For your information, other Facebook-owned messaging apps such as WhatsApp already offer calls with E2EE, which prevents anyone except the sender and recipient from seeing the encrypted data. Likewise with several other video calling applications such as Zoom, Signal and Apple FaceTime.
