JAKARTA - The use of the internet, gadgets and other information technology devices is becoming more common during the corona virus pandemic. Almost all activities nowadays have to be done from home, including for school.

The Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection, I Gusti Ayu Bintang Darmawati reminded Indonesian children to be smart when using social media.

"So that you don't get caught on the bad side (of cyberspace), you have to be smart and wise users," said Minister Bintang during the 2021 National Children's Day AMAN Festival, Sunday, July 18.

Technological developments offer great opportunities for children, namely accessing information and knowledge.

"Children's access to various internet and social media facilities must be maintained in order to obtain information and knowledge," said Bintang.

The rapid development of the internet and technology is accompanied by risks, such as the spread of hoaxes, fraud, cyberbullying, misuse of personal data of social media users to exploitation of children which can lead to pornography and sexual exploitation.

"In fact, the right of children to access information that is appropriate for their age for quality growth and development is an embodiment of human rights," said Bintang.

He asked the children to look for news sources that are actual and can be accounted for, for example from social media accounts belonging to government agencies. If they find anything suspicious on social media, Bintang asks the child to report it to their parents or teacher.

The Minister of PPPA also understands that idolizing someone is a common thing for children, especially teenagers. Even so, Bintang urges children to be wise in digesting the content of their idols.

In addition, it is also important for children and adolescents to maintain good manners when interacting in cyberspace. "What you say and spread on social media, the impact will be felt in the real world," said Bintang.

Bintang also reminded not to use harsh words on social media and cyberbullying.
