JAKARTA – After the Regent of Mukomuko, Bengkulu, asked the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) to block popular games such as Mobile Legends, PUBG, and Free Fire. Kominfo is still considering the blocking complaint.
"The Ministry of Communications and Informatics will, in principle, process and consider all blocking requests that we receive in accordance with applicable regulations," said Kominfo Spokesperson Dedy Permadi as quoted by Antara.
Regarding the blocking of these popular games, Dedy explained that these actions must be carried out carefully following the applicable regulations. The reason is, if the blocking is implemented, it will apply throughout Indonesia.
The government has regulated the policy of blocking content and digital platforms through Minister of Communication and Informatics Regulation Number 5 of 2020 concerning Private Scope Electronic System Operators which was amended through Minister of Communication and Information Technology Regulation Number 10 of 2021. In the regulation, it is stated that applications must be made through a complaint channel that has been established by the government.
Some time ago, the Regent of Mukomuko, Sapuan, had submitted an application to the Ministry of Communication and Information to block sites and online games that were considered to have a negative impact on children's development. The request was submitted by Sapuan through a letter addressed to the Minister of Communications and Informatics, Johnny G. Plate.
The request for blocking online games was confirmed by the Head of the Mukomuko Regency Communication and Information Office, Bustari Maller. The blocking requests include a number of popular online games such as Mobile Legends, PUBG, Free Fire, and Higgs Domino.
"The Regent has submitted a letter of application to ask the Minister of Communication and Information through the Directorate General of Information at the Ministry of Communication and Information to block online games in the Mukomuko Regency area," said Bustari.
He also revealed that children in Mukomuko are already addicted to online games. Bustari also added that this condition must receive serious attention from the Indonesian government.
