JAKARTA - After a long time that YouTube has run on Apple's operating system, iOS will officially get support for the picture-in-picture (PiP) feature. Initially, this feature was only available for paid or premium users.

"Picture-in-Picture (PiP) allows users to watch YouTube videos in the background player while simultaneously browsing outside the YouTube app on their mobile device," YouTube told MacRumors Sunday, June 20.

"We started rolling out PiP to YouTube Premium subscribers on iOS and plan to roll out PiP to all United States (US) iOS users as well."

Actually, this PiP feature has been available for iPad since iOS 9 came along, while iPhone on iOS 14. However, the feature doesn't work well. PiP can only be used on the iPad if using Safari, as well as the iPhone.

With this update, that error should not happen again. All premium subscribers on iOS will be able to use the features on the YouTube app, just like Android users.

Even so, YouTube has not confirmed when this feature will be coming globally soon. But clearly, this feature is already available for premium users.

However, it is claimed that this PiP feature can cause battery drain problems and excessive data usage. The reason is, this feature lets the video keep running, even on a small screen, it will definitely drain the iPhone battery quickly.
