JAKARTA - Apple has officially integrated Alibaba Group's Qwen artificial intelligence model into Apple Intelligence for users in China. Qwen can be used through Siri and Writing Tools to write, rewrite, and summarize text.
China Daily, quoted on Sunday, August 9, reported that the confirmation appeared in an update to the Simplified Chinese Mac user guide published by Apple on its official website on Saturday.
The document says Apple Intelligence can work with Qwen, Alibaba's large language model.
Large language models are AI systems trained with large amounts of data to understand and generate language.
The Qwen extension is available on macOS 26.6 or later. However, access is restricted to users who are in mainland China with the country or region on the Apple ID set according to that location.
China Daily said the use of locally developed AI models helps Apple adapt to regulatory requirements in China while still providing AI capabilities to its users.
Qwen supports two main functions, namely Writing Tools and integration with Siri.
Through Writing Tools, users can ask AI to create or rewrite text in apps like Notes and Mail based on simple commands.
Siri can also use Qwen to provide a more complete answer.
Apple gives an example of a user saying, "Hey Siri, ask Qwen to write a poem about a dragon."
Users can also ask Siri to use Qwen to summarize a document.
Siri will first ask for user consent before using Qwen to execute the request.
