BINUS University launched a Master of Business Law program amid the rapid global digital development. This launch was accompanied by a panel discussion themed Law in the Age of AI and Digital Economy in International Trade.
The event highlighted how Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and the dynamics of the digital economy have changed the legal landscape as well as the way of cross-border trade. This was also recognized by the Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Habiburokhman, who was one of the speakers.
Habiburokhman stated that the efficiency offered by AI such as Gemini has changed the way of work, including in the legislative world. However, he emphasized that legal regulations in Indonesia are still difficult to catch up with the evolution of technology.
"We are constantly lagging behind technological developments. (therefore) we are updating the ITE law," said Habiburokhman at the launch of the BINUS University Master of Business Law program on Friday, June 26. "But it's still a long way to go to reach the current situation. Cybercrime, and so on, is extraordinary."
On the other hand, Deputy Minister of Trade, Dyah Roro Esti Widya Putri, explained that digital interactions also proliferated amid global geopolitical uncertainty. The presence of technologies such as AI and the Internet of Things (IoT) is also considered to require the readiness of a solid bilateral policy framework.
From the perspective of legal practitioners, Perqara CEO and Lawyer at Hasibuan and Hasibuan, Yakup Putra Hasibuan, assessed that AI is a blessing. Legal research that usually takes 3 to 4 days can now be cut to 20-30 minutes using AI such as Claude or ChatGPT.
However, there are real threats such as data hallucinations (false information) and cyber security. Therefore, Yakup realizes that the ethics of using AI is very important in the professional field, especially in terms of protecting client data.
"It is very important for very strict regulations because cyber security is very important. Just imagine that we don't know the prompt we enter into this AI, who is the end of the data? ... It's cloud-based all," said Yakup.
Yakup also reminded that the issue of AI accountability needs to be considered at this time. Various issues such as autonomous car accidents (self-driving cars) or losses due to information errors from AI can be studied to generate new thoughts.
"If it turns out that we ask ChatGPT wrong, we lose, can we not sue ChatGPT Indonesia? It's not necessarily here. So this liability has great potential for us to produce new experts, new thoughts," added Yakup.
