Saudi Arabia reaffirmed the importance of strengthening international cooperation to ensure the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) and harness its potential to advance sustainable development.

Citing the Saudi News Agency via AN, Saturday, June 20, Saudi on behalf of Arab countries delivered the statement during the UN General Assembly's interactive dialogue in New York with the co-chair of the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI.

The Permanent Representative of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, Abdulaziz Alwasil, said his country welcomed efforts to implement the Global Digital Pact and establish an independent panel on AI.

His country also, he continued, emphasized the importance of dialogue and continued cooperation between the government, the United Nations, the private sector, academic institutions, and civil society.

Saudi Arabia emphasized that member countries should play a central role in the future AI governance mechanism, while respecting the sovereign right of each country to formulate national policies in accordance with their development priorities and needs.

The Saudi ambassador also highlighted the importance of developing an ethical framework for responsible use of AI based on transparency, reliability, and accountability, while protecting privacy and human rights and considering cultural and social values.

Saudi Arabia stressed the need to address the risks arising from the misuse of AI technology, including disinformation, deepfake, and cyber attacks, to strengthen public confidence and promote safe and beneficial use around the world.
