JAKARTA - The Ministry of Communication and Digital has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ASEAN Foundation to expand the ASEAN AI Ready program in Indonesia.

The program itself is intended to expand learning about artificial intelligence (AI) technology, as well as encourage responsible use of AI in Southeast Asia.

The Executive Director of the ASEAN Foundation, Piti Srisangnam, said that the signing of this MoU is a form of mutual commitment to build an AI future that can be accessed by all communities.

"ASEAN Foundation is committed to ensuring that AI becomes a force for inclusion, innovation, and sustainable development. Through the signing of this formal agreement," said Piti in the Signing Ceremony of the MoU between the Ministry of Komdigi and the ASEAN Foundation on Thursday, June 4.

ASEAN AI Ready is a regional initiative developed by the ASEAN Foundation and supported by Google.org since 2024, to increase people's AI literacy through training, campaigns, policy dialogues, and multilingual learning platforms.

According to Piti, Indonesia is one of the countries with the highest achievement of implementation. This program has managed to reach more than 5.3 million Indonesian people, from the initial target of 2.7 million participants.

Through this partnership, the ASEAN Foundation targets this program to reach an additional 250 thousand beneficiaries through various types of AI capacity building activities.

Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, also emphasized that this agreement was in line with Komdigi's commitment to preparing human resources (HR) who are not only able to use technology, but also understand and lead its development.

"This MoU expands our mandate in developing national digital talent, by equipping the community to be able to utilize, understand, direct, and lead technological innovation in Indonesia," said Nezar.

Meanwhile, Head of the Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDM) Komdigi, Bonifasius Wahyu Pudjianto said the development of digital talent is one of the government's strategic investments in facing digital transformation.

He explained that Komdigi has carried out various digital talent development programs, such as the Digital Talent Scholarship (DTS), Digital Leadership Academy, to the AI Talent Factory which works with universities in Indonesia, including UGM, ITS, and Brawijaya University.

"This achievement proves that Indonesian talent is ready to adopt AI and create AI-based solutions for real-world challenges. Our task is clear, to open more opportunities for talents like them to learn, innovate, and lead," he concluded.
