JAKARTA - The AI war is now not just about who has the smartest machine. What is more expensive is the contents of the kitchen in the form of good, neat, and trustworthy human content.

Quoted from a Yonhap report, Thursday, May 28, Naver Corp. is preparing to invest 1 trillion won in the next five years to encourage user-generated content for artificial intelligence or AI services.

If using the exchange rate of 1 South Korean won is in the range of Rp11.65-Rp11.77. With this benchmark, Naver's investment is equivalent to around Rp11.6 trillion to Rp11.7 trillion.

"The focus of AI platform competition is now moving toward securing data quality and service competitiveness," said Kim Kwang-hyun, Chief Data and Contents Officer at Naver, in a company press release.

Kim said Naver will expand non-technical efforts to find good content and its creators. Its value reached 1 trillion won in five years.

The initial step is the Naver Mate program which will be launched next month. This program gives monetary incentives to creators based on how often their content is cited by Naver's smart search service, AI Briefing.

AI Briefing is a generative AI-based search feature. In simple terms, this system summarizes the answers from various information so that users can get to the core of the answer faster.

Naver said about 3,000 users will be selected each month. They can receive up to 10 million won, or about US$6,632.6.

AI Briefing was launched last March. According to Naver, the service is now used by around 30 million users each month.

For the AI industry, this step is important. So far, many creators are worried that their works are used to train or enrich AI services without clear compensation. Naver is trying to take a path so that content that is useful for AI is given economic value.

Naver will also launch a Smart Lens feature in June. This feature helps users search for information about various objects by recording or photographing them with a mobile phone camera.

Through this major investment, Naver wants to pursue two things, namely strengthening AI services and maintaining a supply of quality content. Because, no matter how advanced the technology is, AI still needs human work so that the answer is not only fast, but also trustworthy.
