South Korea is preparing a fund of 30 billion won or around 20.7 million US dollars to build an artificial intelligence or AI data platform for autonomous ships. If converted at a rate of around Rp12 per won, the value is around Rp360 billion.
Reported by Kyodo News, Thursday, May 7, the project is a four-year project jointly led by the South Korean industry ministry and the maritime ministry.
Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering or KRISO will collect data from various ship systems. From navigation, engines, remote control, autonomous ship systems, marine transportation, to other technical data needed to build an AI platform.
For South Korea, data is an important capital. Autonomous ships are not enough to be made sophisticated on paper. The system must learn from strong, accurate data, and in accordance with real sailing conditions.
The South Korean government is encouraging the development of autonomous ships and AI models to strengthen the shipbuilding and shipping industries. This sector is seen as one of the new growth engines.
"Autonomous ships are at the center of the transition of the shipping and shipping industries towards decarbonization and digitization," a maritime ministry official was quoted as saying by Kyodo News.
The ministry official added that the competitiveness of Korean-made autonomous ships will ultimately be determined by the quality of data.
A total of 25 shipping, shipping, and AI companies, as well as research institutions, have submitted letters of interest to participate in the project.
