JAKARTA - OpenAI is expanding the capabilities of ChatGPT again by introducing a new feature called "workspace agents", which is designed to increase team productivity in the workplace.

This feature replaces the concept of Custom GPTs introduced last year. If previously users could create a chatbot specifically for certain needs, now OpenAI brings further evolution with AI agents that can work collaboratively within an organization.

Supported by Codex technology, workspace agents are able to handle various complex tasks, ranging from compiling reports, writing code, to responding to messages. Interestingly, these agents run in the cloud, so they can still work even if the user is offline.

OpenAI explained that this feature is designed to be used together in teams. One agent can be created once, then used and developed together by members of the organization, both through ChatGPT and integration with platforms such as Slack.

"Teams can now create shared agents that handle complex workflows within the constraints of organizational permissions and controls," OpenAI wrote in its announcement.

Workspace agents are currently available in a preview version (research preview) for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers users. In the future, OpenAI also plans to allow direct conversion from Custom GPTs to workspace agents.

This launch is part of a series of major OpenAI updates in the past week, including improvements to Codex and the latest image generation feature.

Strategically, this step shows a new direction for the use of AI: from merely an individual aid to a "digital colleague" who can be collaborated on across teams. If before AI only helped to do the task, now it starts to "work overtime" - even when we have logged out.
