JAKARTA - The Japanese government has officially provided a large subsidy to the Sony Group to strengthen domestic semiconductor production, with a main focus on artificial intelligence (AI) based image sensors.

This support amounts to 60 billion yen or around Rp6.4 trillion as part of a national strategy to secure critical technology supply chains.

Focus on AI Image Sensor

The subsidy is provided through Japan's economic security policy, which places image sensors as a vital component for the future of technology.

These sensors are the backbone of various applications, ranging from autonomous vehicles, automated industrial systems, to AI-based imaging solutions.

Japanese Economy Minister Ryosei Akazawa stressed the importance of stable supplies of these components to support the development of "physical AI".

Large Investment, Production Target 2029

Through its Sony Semiconductor Solutions unit, Sony plans to invest a total of 180 billion yen to build a new production facility in Kumamoto.

The plant is targeted to be able to produce 10,000 300mm-sized wafers per month, with commercial operations scheduled to begin in May 2029.

Sony's Dominance in the Global Market

Currently, Sony is a global leader in the image sensor market, with its products widely used in smartphones, automotive systems, and other advanced technology devices.

This expansion is expected to further strengthen Sony's position amid the increasing global demand for AI and visual computing technologies.

Japan's National Strategy

This investment is part of Japan's broader efforts to reduce dependence on overseas production, while strengthening competitiveness in the global semiconductor industry.

In recent years, competition in the chip sector has intensified, especially with the increasing need for AI, electric vehicles, and industrial automation.

Towards the Physical AI Era

With the increasing need for sensors to "see" the real world - both by autonomous cars and industrial robots - the role of image sensors is becoming increasingly crucial.

Japan's move to support Sony shows that the AI competition is not only in software, but also in the hardware that is the foundation.
