JAKARTA - The government through the Ministry of Communication and Digital will tighten supervision of digital platforms following the increase in cases of violence against women in online spaces.

Based on the results of the joint hearing with Komnas Perempuan, Menkomdigi Meutya Hafid said that at least 2,000 reports every year. Where online sexual violence is the most dominant form with more than 1,600 cases.

Seeing this situation, Meutya emphasized that the digital space should not be a place that allows violence to take place without a response.

"When the crime occurs on the platform, it is their home. That means those who handle it inside are them. We can't get in unless we have certain authority," he said.

He added that the government has the authority to impose sanctions if the content or activities on the platform are deemed to endanger the public.

"If it is really dangerous, we can impose sanctions up to closure. They must be responsible because it is their realm," he said.

The Chairperson of the National Commission for Women Maria Ulfah Anshor stated that the high number of reports of online sexual violence cases did not reflect the actual condition because many cases were not reported.

"The limitations of infrastructure and handling services in a number of regions, especially islands and 3T, also hinder victims in accessing assistance, including for legal and psychological reporting and accompaniment," he explained.

Komnas Perempuan welcomes collaboration with the Ministry of Komdigi to strengthen steps to handle harmful content through the take down mechanism, including for content of sexual violence and exploitation.

In addition to supervision, Komdigi's collaboration with Komnas Perempuan will also be directed towards strengthening digital literacy, public campaigns, and the formulation of policies that are adaptive to technological developments.
