JAKARTA - The Ministry of Communication and Digital assesses that the Roblox platform has not complied with the Government Regulation on child protection in the digital space (PP TUNAS), even though the platform has introduced a new age-based account feature globally.
Roblox Corporation has just announced the launch of two types of age-based accounts, namely Roblox Kids for users aged 5-12 years, and Roblox Select for users aged 13-15 years.
Minister of Communication and Information Meutya Hafid expressed his appreciation for Roblox's efforts to comply with regulations in Indonesia. But according to him, there are still gaps that still allow users under 16 years old to communicate with unknown parties.
"We note that there are major changes made by Roblox, and there is still a loophole where we still find that the adjustment still allows for communication or chat with strangers," Meutya said in a press conference on Tuesday, April 14.
Meutya added, the government has not been able to declare that Roblox has complied with PP TUNAS and its subsidiary regulations. "So with a heavy heart, we have not been able to accept the proposal from Roblox. So it means that we still assess that there is no compliance with PP TUNAS," he added.
However, the government noted the good faith of Roblox and hoped that the company would continue to improve the feature until it met all applicable regulations.
On the same occasion, Meutya also conveyed that the government had received a commitment to compliance from TikTok, following a number of other platforms that had previously complied with applicable regulations including X, Bigo Live, and services within the Meta group such as Instagram, Facebook, and Threads.
