JAKARTA - Amazon announced that they will end system support for old Kindle devices. This decision will apply to Kindles released before 2012.
The policy, which will take effect on May 20, will cut off the old devices from the Kindle Store. In addition, these devices will lose the ability to permanently load new book content.
Amazon has sent out emails notifying users of the discontinuation of the old generation e-reader function in the past week. After the implementation, users can only read downloaded content without being able to buy or borrow new books.
"These models have been supported for at least 14 years, some even up to 18 years, but technology has evolved rapidly during that time, and these devices will no longer be supported in the future," Amazon spokesperson Jesse Carr told TechCrunch, quoted on Thursday, April 9.
The list of models that will be affected by this policy includes the first to fifth generation Kindles, Kindle DX, Kindle Touch, and the first generation Paperwhite. Amazon confirms that devices that have been factory reset cannot be re-registered after the support period ends.
However, users can still access their digital book library through the Kindle mobile app or website. Amazon also offers special promotions for active users to switch to the latest, more modern model devices.
This policy has reaped a wave of disappointment from the user community on social media platforms such as Reddit. Many users are disappointed that their old devices actually still work very well.
With the implementation of this Policy, the only way to still be able to access the latest books is to update their Kindle model. Very old Kindles will only be a medium for reading old books in the coming weeks.
