JAKARTA - Samsung announced that it will stop its built-in messaging app Samsung Messages in July 2026, and switch to Google Messages as the default SMS app on Android devices.
In its official announcement, Samsung said users will receive notifications within the app to guide the transfer process.
If it is not available, users are asked to download Google Messages via the Play Store, then make it the default SMS application through the settings that appear when it is first opened.
For Android 12 and Android 13 users, the Google Messages icon will not automatically move to the main screen dock after the switch. Users need to remove the Samsung Messages icon from the dock, then manually add Google Messages to the main screen to make it easier to access.
Once the app is discontinued, users will no longer be able to send messages through Samsung Messages on the phone, except for emergency service numbers or designated emergency contacts.
On Samsung devices released before 2022, app switching also has the potential to temporarily disrupt an ongoing RCS conversation, but will return to normal if both users switch to Google Messages.
Samsung also confirmed that owners of Galaxy S26 devices and newer models cannot download Samsung Messages from the Galaxy Store.
Meanwhile, all other devices will also no longer be able to download the application after the official termination in July 2026.
