JAKARTA - The Ministry of Communication and Digital is currently being discussed on social media, because the age categorization system for its games (Indonesia Games Rating System or IGRS) is considered inappropriate.
This controversy peaked after several gamers found a number of popular games were given the wrong rating. Such as the adult game Nukitashi which was actually labeled 3+, which means it is safe for all ages to play.
Meanwhile, the local narrative game titled A Space for the Unbound even got a 18+ rating. Not only that, some other popular games including PUBG: Battlegrounds got a 3+ rating without any indication of violence.
Toge Productions CEO, Kris Antoni, in a statement on his personal X account also highlighted the irony that a game with adult content is considered safe for children.
"The Indonesian Game Rating System labels adult sexual content games as games suitable for ages 3 and up. Meanwhile, award-winning games such as Claire Obscure and Metal Gear Solid Delta are labeled as not suitable for distribution in Indonesia," he tweeted.
Ministry of Communication and Information Response
Responding to the issue, Komdigi stated that the IGRS rating display on some games on Steam currently does not fully reflect the official rating that has been verified by IGRS.
"This condition occurs because some rating information is still sourced from the internal mechanism of the self-declare-based platform, while the official verification process by IGRS has not been fully carried out," he wrote on the IGRS official website.
They emphasized that, at this time, Steam is also still in the stage of adjusting internal systems to accommodate the IGRS classification logic, including the technical integration process for service reporting.
At the same time, IGRS and Steam are discussing formal cooperation as the basis for implementing more accurate and compliant ratings in Indonesia.
Komdigi will request an official clarification from Steam and conduct further discussions regarding the legal basis for the implementation of ratings, monitoring mechanisms, adjustment procedures in the event of non-compliance, and procedures for reporting IGRS services on the platform.
"Kemkomdigi hopes for full cooperation from all parties so that the game in Indonesia can be more protected, more transparent, and more accountable to the public," he concluded.
