JAKARTA - Apple is reportedly developing a new feature that allows users to set the iPhone interface display more precisely through a slider that applies to the entire system. The feature is said to be included in the iOS 27 operating system update, which is expected to be released this year.
The information was revealed by technology journalist Mark Gurman in the Power On newsletter published by Bloomberg. In the report it is mentioned that the latest internal version of iOS 27 has not brought major design changes to the Liquid Glass interface concept, but Apple is testing a more flexible visual setting for users.
Liquid Glass is a transparent interface design concept that gives the effect of liquid glass on various iOS visual elements. This design creates a more layered and reflective look so that the interface looks more modern and dynamic compared to previous visual approaches.
In the previous version of the operating system, iOS 26.1, Apple has provided two Liquid Glass display options for users, namely Clear and Tinted modes. Clear mode maintains a high level of transparency on interface elements, while Tinted mode adds an opacity layer so that the display looks more solid and contrast.
Apple then expanded the experiment on iOS 26.2 by introducing a slider that allows users to manually adjust the level of transparency of Liquid Glass. However, the feature is still limited to one element only, namely the clock display on the lock screen.
Through iOS 27, Apple is said to want to expand the function of the slider so that it can set the transparency level across the operating system, including the settings menu, control center, and various other interface elements.
If it is properly implemented, users can later adjust the appearance of the iPhone ranging from a very transparent interface to a more solid appearance according to each person's visual preferences.
According to Gurman, Apple has actually tried to develop a full system Liquid Glass slider while working on iOS 26. However, the effort faced technical challenges when Apple's engineering team tried to implement it consistently across all interface elements.
The main challenges relate to visual consistency and system performance. While the level of transparency can change dynamically across the system, each interface element must be able to adapt without interfering with the smoothness of the animation or the stability of the device.
Due to this constraint, this feature was not released on iOS 26.
Apple is expected to officially introduce iOS 27 at Apple's annual developer conference, the Worldwide Developers Conference, which is usually held in June. Beta testing programs for developers are expected to begin in the same period, before the final version of the operating system is publicly launched in September along with the latest generation of iPhones.
